The term "brackish" covers a range of salinity levels, generally from 0.5 to 30 grams of salt per liter (or parts per thousand).

Characteristics and Formation

  • Salinity: Brackish water has an intermediate level of salinity, making it unsuitable for drinking or most agricultural uses without treatment.
  • Formation: It is most commonly formed in estuaries, where a river flows into the sea, creating a mixing zone. Other natural sources include mangrove swamps, coastal lagoons, and certain fossil aquifers. Human activities, such as civil engineering projects like dikes or the flooding of coastal marshlands, can also create brackish water environments.

Brackish Water Ecosystems

Brackish water ecosystems are dynamic environments with fluctuating salinity levels. The organisms that live in these habitats must be highly adaptable to survive the constant changes.

  • Estuaries: These are the most extensive brackish water habitats and are among the most productive ecosystems in the world. They serve as critical "nursery grounds" for many fish and shellfish species, providing a place for young to feed and grow. They are also important staging points for migrating fish, such as salmon and eels, which need to acclimate to changing salinity.
  • Biodiversity: These environments support a unique range of species, including salt-tolerant plants like mangroves and various species of fish, crabs, and birds that have adapted to live in varying salt levels.
  • Ecological Role: Brackish water ecosystems perform important environmental functions, such as filtering water runoff, recycling nutrients, and providing protection against coastal erosion.

Human Uses

As freshwater resources become scarcer, brackish water is being increasingly considered as a viable alternative for various human uses, particularly with the help of desalination technology.

  • Drinking Water: While not safe for direct consumption, brackish water can be treated to produce potable water. Desalination of brackish water is often more cost-effective and less energy-intensive than desalinating seawater due to its lower salt content.
  • Agriculture: With proper treatment, brackish water can be used to irrigate salt-tolerant crops.
  • Industrial Use: It is used in industrial processes, such as for cooling systems and boiler feed water, after treatment.
  • Aquaculture: Many species of fish and shellfish, like shrimp and barramundi, thrive in brackish environments, making it suitable for fish farming.

The primary methods for desalinating brackish water are Reverse Osmosis (RO) and Electrodialysis (ED). These processes remove salts and other impurities, making the water usable for a variety of purposes.
